Adjustments, evidence and political tensions in the US Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is one of the cornerstones of the U.S. food system, helping millions of families access healthy and affordable food. As Congress debates potential reforms through the 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and several states consider new restrictions on how benefits can be used, the future of SNAP is at the center of important discussions on food security, public health, and labor policy. Drawing on historical evidence and economic research, our study shows that targeted policy adjustments could make the program more effective without increasing costs, and that simplifying enrollment could help more families participate and reduce food insecurity nationwide.
