Trust in Science and its Communicators:
The Relationship Between Trust and Consumer Decision-Making for New Agri-Food Biotechnologies over Time
Motivation. New agricultural and food technologies, such as gene editing and bioengineering, have the potential to address pressing societal challenges related to nutrition, food safety, and environmental sustainability. However, what is scientifically feasible is not always what consumers accept or farmers adopt. Trust plays a crucial role in shaping public and stakeholder acceptance of these innovations.
What we do. We developed a tracking survey, called Trusted Voices, to evaluate whom people trust when it comes to food, agriculture, and emerging technologies. Using monthly surveys, we assess trust in key actors, including scientists, farmers, retailers, food companies, policymakers, and advocacy groups. The data collected will build a longitudinal dataset spanning three years, hosted on an interactive dashboard. This resource will enable the creation of trust indices to monitor and better understand shifts in public trust over time.
